Question: adopted stray from shelter?

Found the most beautiful female black stray "setter" for adoption at the shelter. Got to bring her home today after they wormed, vaccinated and spayed her (all for $25). She has a soft touch with her mouth and her soft, smooth, wavy coat reminds me of a golden retriever but she is black. Can anyone tell me of the temperment of a retriever?

She is sooo sweet. I lost my 10 y/o dog last yr and my 3 y/o cat and I just moved into a home with a fenced in back yard last month. So far the cat rules the roost on the first night but I want to make sure that they can get along so want to know about the breed. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer: Definitely sounds like a Flat Coat Retriever or more likely a cross between a black Lab and a Golden Retriever. Is she a lanky dog or fairly solid? Setters are definitely lankier than the Retrievers. Another thing to look at are the feet. Labs have webbing between their toes which helps them swim - I'm pretty sure Setters don't.

All those breeds are very sweet, very friendly and very devoted to their owners. I have a Landseer/Labrador mix and he's all those plus was VERY easy to train. Remember, too, that being called "Setter" was just one of the shelter staff guessing what breed she is. She was a stray so they don't have any background on her.

As far as introducing to your cat do so with some person able to hold the cat and another holding the dog on a leash. And keep all introductions supervised until you're sure they get along.

Good luck with your new pup - sounds like a sweetheart. And yes - please show us a pic of her!

Question: What is a good home makeover/redesign show besides "Extreme Home Makeover"?

My boyfriend and roommates live in an old beautiful house from mid-1800's. However, there are a lot of things wrong with it, very little furniture, bad paint jobs, etc. It has SO much potential. Being college students, short on funds and uneducated in interior design, I want to take a stab at applying for one of these shows (but not Extreme Home Makeover, as they prefer underpriviledged families). Thanks!

Answer: HGTV has a lot of shows like that.
